The Mandal is a non-profit organization. Our mission is to continuously strive for unity amongst our community through educating and providing opportunities for our youth; celebrating our cultural heritage; and creating a meeting place for our community to network and grow.

The first organization of Gujaratis I Toronto, Gujarati Cultural Society, was established in 1967. Most Gujaratis were members of that organization. Prajapati’s actively contributed to it through executive committee positions and general memberships. Most functions were held on Sundays which was not suitable to many Prajapatis. Accordingly, Prajapatis participation gradually stopped. Discussion started in 1972 to organize our own association. These thoughts were put into action by Kalyanji Mistry , Prabhudas Prajapati and Champakbhai Mistry who initiated our first census of Prajapatis in 1973. There were 52 families living in the Greater Toronto Area and surrounding towns. The first meeting was called at 90 Edmonton Drive in Willowdale, Scarborough. It was decided at that meeting that Prajapatis should try to establish our own organization under the name of Shree Prajapati Mandal of Toronto (“SPM”). The goals and objectives of the SPM were simple and all encompassing such as fostering unity, cooperation, love and harmony among members and to facilitate an environment where members can meet with each other and are able to pass on our cultural and religious heritage to the future generations. A general meeting of Prajapatis was called on May 17, 1974 and questions from members were addressed and it was decided to elect the very first Executive Committee. At Downsview Secondary school, the SPM had its first general meeting and elected the first Executive Committee and the Shree Prajapati Mandal of Toronto was official. A constitution of the SPM was necessary for the incorporation and administration of the Samaj. In 1974, Mr. Shantichandra Shah, a lawyer, was requested to prepare the constitution and SPM bylaws. Once finalized and approved by the members at the time, SPM was incorporated and filed with the Government of Ontario in 1976. Since 1976, SPM conducted functions such as picnics in the summer months, Ram Navmi, Janma-Asthami Garba, Navratri Celebrations, Diwali Show and Dinner, New Year Celebration and Anniversary Parties. Members participated in all these events for many years and contributed to the SPM’s long term objective of having our own building. Prajapatis who migrated here over the last 50 years or so have gone through difficult times settling in Toronto and Canada. Through determination and hard work we have all settled and through the support of our SPM samaj, have a place to unite with family and friends in our own community. Because our samaj, our youngsters who are growing up in the Canadian culture have a opportunity to meet and know our Prajapati culture through our social and cultural events. 🏆 2024 — 50 Years of SPM 🎉 Golden Jubilee Celebration SPM celebrated its 50th anniversary with a spectacular Mela at the Pearson Convention Centre on August 24, 2024. 2021 — Community Support ❤️ $36,000+ Raised for COVID Relief SPM joined Prajapati Samajs across Canada and the UK to raise over $36,000 in support of Prajapati families affected by COVID-19 in Gujarat. 2010 — Bringing Communities Together 💃 Multi-Samaj Dance Competition SPM hosted a vibrant multi-Samaj dance competition at the Mississauga Living Arts Centre. 2003 — Preserving Gujarati Cuisine 📖 First Cookbook Published SPM Toronto Mahila published its first cookbook, Gujarati Dishes: The Quick and Easy Way. This was followed in 2013 by "The Essential Indian Cookbook." Both became tremendous successes and continue to be sold around the world. 2001 — Disaster Relief 🌏 $20,000+ Donated for Earthquake Relief SPM raised and donated over $20,000 to support earthquake relief efforts in India. 1999 — 25 Years of SPM 🥂 Silver Jubilee Celebration SPM celebrated its 25th anniversary with a Gala Dinner and Reception at the Regal Constellation Hotel & Banquet Centre, with nearly 2,000 members in attendance. 1996 — 🥉 SPM WINS: 3rd Place: FOGANA Raas Garba Competition, New York, New York 1995 — 🥇 SPM WINS: 1st Place: FOGA Raas Garba Competition 1986 — 🥇 SPM WINS: 1st Place: FOGA & FOGANA Raas Garba Competition, Houston, Texas 1986 — 🥈SPM WINS: 2nd Place: FOGANA Raas Garba Competition, Detroit, Michigan 1985 — 🥇 SPM WINS: 1st Place: FOGA & FOGANA Raas Garba Competitions, Chicago, Illinois
